A Penistone businesswoman proves she has the recipe for success
Jacqueline Marsdens family have always had their fingers in a number of pies, usually of the pork variety.
Her father and grandfather made pies using an old and trusted family recipe and a pie-making machine they referred affectionately to as the Little Champion.
So when Jacqueline was made redundant from her marketing role and decided to forge a name for herself in pie-making, she knew the champ would have to be brought out of retirement.
Granddad Freddie bought the machine in an auction of Second World War army surplus equipment in the 1940s for his butchers shop on Smithy Hill in Thurgoland, she explained. After 30 successful years, he retired and the machine was sold.
My dad continued the pie making tradition, using the same secret family recipe, but this time making the pies by hand. But he couldnt keep pace with demand and answered an ad for a pie machine. The seller had bought it from a retired butcher in Thurgoland Granddad Freddie!
Jacquelines own business Penistone Puddings & Pies was recently awarded a development grant by the Peak District National Park Authority and Sheffield City Council to expand its range of home-made goodies and offer cookery courses.
There is a real demand for good, affordable cookery courses locally, and we find that we are attracting an increasing number of local folk looking for understandable courses delivered in an effective way, she said.
The courses are operated from the companys picturesque headquarters at Millhouse Green, just outside Penistone.
Among the courses on offer in the coming months are: Flavours of Italy (October 19th); Halloween Treats for children and parents (October 31st); Bonfire Treats for parents and children (November 2nd); Christmas Cakes & Puddings (November 9th); Christmas Cakes & Mince Pies (November 16th); Seasonal Chutneys & Relish (December 9th); Festive Canaps (December 14th); Marvellous Marmalade (January 25th 2013); Baking Day for children and parents (February 15th); Perfect Pastry (February 22nd); Baking Cakes & Biscuits (March 15th); and Easter Treats for children and parents (March 27th).
