Yorkshire's reputation as a leading foodie destination is regularly celebrated in its towns and cities. Leeds is no exception reports Jenny Greene
Thousands of visitors indulged in the best of food and drink at the three-day Leeds Loves Food Festival. They were welcomed by celebrity chef Brian Turner as well as the chief executive and president of Asda,
Andy Clarke, who said the supermarket chain remained proud of its Yorkshire roots.
If three words were meant to go together, its Leeds, loves and food. Asda is really proud of its Yorkshire roots and were really proud to be supporting this great festival of food.
We hold strong to our core values of quality, value and service with that special local touch as we know that our shoppers want to buy food that is reared, grown or produced in their local region. We have over 6,000 locally produced products on our shelves from 500 local producers which complement our great quality food brands. The Leeds Love Food festival shares that same ethos of bringing local producers together and celebrating the great food Leeds brings to our tables.
The festival, now in its seventh year, included the Yorkshire Food and Drink Show in Millennium Square which had 100 stalls selling produce including cheeses, wines, chutneys and ice cream. A number of open air kitchens served hot food and drinks.
There was a series of cooking demo strations, cook-offs and competitions in the shows theatre kitchen. Brian Turner was the first celebrity chef on the stage to demonstrate how to prepare a healthy meal. There were more cookery demonstrations
by Richard Allens Create, Brasserie Blanc and Chino Latino as well as Asdas own chefs. Blur guitarist and cheese-maker, Alex James, was also at the festival with samples of his range of award-winning cheese at the Asda stand.
There were venues across the city showcasing the best food and drink on offer in Leeds. Among the new attractions was the Moroccan Market of Handicraft in Briggate, which opened tents with stalls offering a wide variety of artisan products. The festival also had a medieval kitchen run by the University of Leeds and childrens pizza making classes held by Casa Mia.
