A grade two listed Georgian mansion with fantastic views of Whitby harbour is celebrating its 220th birthday in style, thanks to the dedication of Elizabeth and Edward Astin, owners of two of the seaside towns most prominent businesses.
The couple have used all the expertise and experience theyve gleaned as owner/directors of Astins and Whitby Holiday Cottages to transform Whitehall, built in 1792 above Campions famous Whitby Shipyard, into six luxury holiday apartments.
This historically significant property an architectural gem in a town with an exceedingly rich heritage is just half a mile from the centre of Whitby, enjoying commanding views of daily life in the still bustling harbour.
With two vibrant, time-consuming business and six equally vibrant and time-consuming young children to care for, Elizabeth and Edward could have been forgiven for taking a hands-off approach to giving Whitehall a new lease of life.
But this was not just any old development property; this was the former home of Elizabeths parents, with all the emotional ties that entails. So they dug deep, planned carefully and worked diligently to create a simply stunning development in tribute to a building that had served their family well for many years.
The first of the six apartments, Campion, occupies the upper and lower ground floors and offers a delightful blend of original and contemporary design.
It features a beautiful Oakwood Cappuccino designer kitchen with a conservatory-style dining area to capture the afternoon sun; a separate period drawing room with an original ducks nest fireplace and electric reclining leather suite; a twin bedroom, house bathroom and shower; and a master bedroom with French doors, a king size leather bed and a marble-tiled en-suite shower.
Spinnaker is a compact duplex at the north-east corner of the property, offering an attractive blend of colour and charm.
Featuring one of the very best views in Whitby framed by a large bay window looking down the River Esk to the Abbey and out to sea, it is an ideal holiday bolt-hole with accommodation comprising a living room, fitted kitchen, double master bedroom with French doors to a private patio, a cosy twin bedroom and a bathroom.
Next on the list is Thomas Turnbulls, an indulgent ground floor apartment named after the head of the original shipping family who owned Whitehall in Whitbys golden era of shipbuilding.
The apartment boasts a fine parquet-floored entrance hall; a large living room; a traditionally furnished kitchen with throughout with granite and oak; a master bedroom with a mahogany sleigh bed and en-suite shower; a twin bedroom; and a bathroom.
The aptly-named Look Out is the height of contemporary design, boasting panoramic views from all rooms and a glorious private roof terrace.
It also offers a visually arresting black and white living room; a French-design master bedroom with an en-suite slipper bathroom; a large twin/double bedroom with French doors to a sun terrace; a black and white shower room; and a hand-built oak staircase.
As the name suggests, Driftwood is designed and finished in a relaxed, contemporary style. It offers a bright, cosy living room with leather armchairs; a dining suite with wonderful views; a well-equipped kitchen; double and twin bedrooms to the east and south elevations;
and a lovely marble-tiled bathroom.
And finally we come to the Genoa Suite, named after an early sailing rig. This is a wonderfully quirky yet impressive split-level apartment offering something completely different.
Stretching luxuriously across the southern first and second floor elevations, it has a living room; a startling red, state-of-the-art kitchen with a galleried mezzanine and sparking chandelier above; full-height bay windows bringing Whitbys glorious sunsets into the dining area; a marble-tiled shower room; a cloakroom off the inner hallway; a double bedroom in the rear roof section; and a further modern en-suite bedroom
