He found a city unlike anywhere he had ever been. He worked as a door to door Betterware salesman and travelled about the suburbs of this getting a feel for the people and places. Before his year in Leeds was up, he had taken a large number of photographs of working class areas including Burley and Armley. ‘I remember the overwhelming smell of coal fires,’ says Jaquier of the time, and indeed the buildings reflect another, post industrial age of blackened buildings and almost carless streets. Jaquier returned to Leeds in December 2007, almost 40 years later ‘out of curiosity’ and was surprised by the excited reception his photographs have received. Many of the red brick terraces depicted in his photographs are unchanged, but it is the human landscape that is very different. Children play freely in the streets and pinafored ladies with rollers in their hair hang out washing. Other shots show bowler-hatted businessmen rushing to work with umbrellas tucked under their arms. The beginnings of the immense changes that were about to be made to the city are captured in the shots of neighbourhoods being demolished to make way for the modern housing solutions that were to come.
