Self-taught artist Julia Odell has scooped the top prize in this years Harrogate Open with her evocatively-named painting Nithering Almscliffe.
This ever-popular annual show, which showcases the work of talented artists from around the region, will run until January 20th at The Mercer Art Gallery on Swan Road.
Julia won 200 from a total prize pot of 1,000 donated by the Friends of the Mercer. The 100 second prize went to Darren Higham from Otley for his painting Edgelands Cont. And special commendation awards of 50 each went to Laney Birkhead, Piers Browne, Caroline Machray, Andrea Newall, Mike Robson and Richard Turner.
I believe that inspiration for art is all around and particularly in the local environment, said Julia, who has given up teaching and ceramics to paint full-time. I source ideas from my local community and hope that my affection for it is imparted to the viewer.
I feel that the appreciation and application of painting should be instinctive. An emotive response should be felt instinctively and not learned, forced, nor determined by the art establishment current preference. I intend to continue to develop my own style while investigating the marriage of cartoon and reality with the varied landscapes of Yorkshire.
Artists in all media entered a total of 612 works for the 2012 Harrogate Open, from which 206 were selected by a panel led by Harrogate artist Adam King, freelance curator Caroline Krzesinska and Jane Sellars, curator of art for Harrogate Borough Council. They have chosen their winners, but theres still time for you to have your say by taking part in the Harrogate Open Peoples Prize.
All you have to do is visit the free exhibition and vote for the artwork you like best, with the winning selection netting the 100 prize
The Mercer Art Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday. For more information, phone 01423 556188 or visit harrogate.gov.uk/museums
