Eagles and birdies were appropriately on the score card for a charity golf day held by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust at Pike Hills Golf Club in York.

Organised by the conservation charity’s Director of Finance, Peter Batchelor, 15 teams took to the fairways at the course which surrounds the Trust’s Askham Bog nature reserve. The important refuge on the outskirts of the city was Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s first ever protected site, led by the vision of local chocolatiers and naturalists Terry and Rowntree. On his most recent visit to the city in 2015, Sir David Attenborough also took time to explore the site which is famed for its rare and huge royal ferns, among orchids, butterflies and dragonflies.

Victorious on the golf day was a combined team representing Pinsent Mason solicitors, Deloitte and HSBC who chalked up an impressive score of 87 for the parkland course. The more than £1,500 raised included plenty of light-hearted forfeit donations for hitting the bunkers, water features – and of course anyone driving a shot into Askham Bog itself!

Next year’s event will take place on Thursday June 7, and tee times can be booked at ywt.org.uk/events, or for more information call 01904 659570.
