Friends and readers made it clear that there was a distinct list of must-haves to create the perfect Sunday lunch out: home-made Yorkshire puddings (preferably served as a starter); top-quality, locally-reared meat; proper roast potatoes (never frozen!) that are crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle; a good selection of well-cooked vegetables; plentiful, meaty gravy and traditional, seasonal desserts. These all seem to be simply essential for the perfect Sunday lunch.
Writer and author David Lines, from Tollerton near York, said Sunday lunch was a true indicator of a restaurants pedigree. Quality is crucial; if restaurants start by selecting the best cuts of meat theyre halfway there but often its the little extras that make all the difference like blazing log fires or crunchy crackling. The Pheasant at Harome gets his vote as the best of the bunch, as much for the atmosphere as the food. He also rates The White Swan at Ampleforth, The Alice Hawthorn at Nun Monkton near York and the award-winning Black Swan at Oldstead, which offers local meat, great veg and good value for money
Clare and John Clayton from Shepley near Huddersfield usually cook their Sunday roast at home, but when they do go out they love The Butchers Arms at Hepworth for its excellent food and friendly staff, Its just a really cosy pub.
The Wagon & Horses at Langsett, South Yorkshire, also gets their vote. The traditional homemade puddings like bilberry pie and baked egg custard are a great attraction.
Tricia Sherriff, who runs a womens lifestyle club has discovered Caf No 8 Gillygate, York. Its a small yet fabulous restaurant serving roast rump of Wolds beef with horseradish cream. My only disappointment is not having discovered it sooner, says Tricia.
For Mark Holdstock Sunday lunch actually takes place closer to tea time usually after a trip to watch the Bradford Bulls. His favourite post-match meal venue is vegetarian Gujarati restaurant Prashad, just five minutes from Odsal Stadium. The main courses are great, but the highlights for me are the starter-sized Roadside Snacks. A more traditional Sunday lunch for Mark is The General Tarleton at Ferrensby near Knaresborough. The vegetables are always just right. The chefs should be put in charge of getting the nations kids to eat healthier food.
The Fox & Rabbit Inn near Pickering is the firm favourite of Debbie Bell from Easingwold. Most important of all is good quality meat; beef oozing pinkly on the plate, golden Yorkshires with a squidgy middle and lots of fresh and crisp vegetables.
Anita Cormac OBE of The Cooking School at Dean Clough, Halifax says the best place she knows for Sunday lunch is The Shibden Mill Inn at Shibden near Halifax which has just won the title Sunday Lunch Pub of the Year at the prestigious Publican Food & Drink Awards.
