The Tanglewood is a welcoming restaurant on the Malton Road north of York which prides itself on excellent food and friendly service
How would you describe your restaurant?
The Tanglewood has been a welcoming sight on the A64 near York for many years. Now a family-owned and run Gastropub, it serves the best of British traditional and modern cuisine. It has a cosy, informal atmosphere where guests can relax and enjoy the great service and food. With a dramatic and unique dcor, the walls are adorned with original theatre memorabilia, which has been collected over the years by owner and theatrical impresario Nick Thomas (who also owns the Les Routiers award-winning restaurant The Copper Horse at Seamer). Its a wonderful trip down memory lane.
What are the key ingredients to your success?
The restaurant offers a traditional, home-cooked style menu using local ingredients from local suppliers. With something for everyone from comforting food like roasted lamb shank and homemade steak and ale pie to lighter dishes such as crab cakes and goats cheese and caramelised onion tart.
The dishes always represent value for money without comprising quality. Using local suppliers ensures our ingredients are not only as fresh as possible, but means the Tanglewood is part of the local community and supports the local economy. Customers like the personal touch the Tanglewood offers and the passion for giving the best dining experience possible ensures that they come back time, and time again.
How have your customers influenced your menu choices?
The menu choices are entirely customer led. The ever popular classic dishes are always on the menu, so customers will always have their favourite dish and we add new dishes seasonally to complement these. We attract groups of all sizes, business clients and families, who all demand good quality, tasty food.
The Steak Nights and Traditional Sunday Lunches are extremely popular. Our childrens menu is carefully designed to offer much more than the usual ubiquitous chicken nuggets; it offers healthy, value for money food that children will love. We also offer carefully selected dishes on our gluten free menu for those guests with dietary requirements, to enjoy.
What brings your customers back again and again?
Our customers come back time, and time again for two reasons, great food and friendly service; they love the fact that they always see the same faces and everyone knows their name. Our food is consistently good which ensures our customers return and hopefully bring their friends with them. With classics dishes such as a proper prawn cocktail, pate, and home battered scampi tails and steak and chips, through to more contemporary dishes like our boned and rolled crispy roast duck or slow roast belly pork. The standard of our service always draws compliments, the personal touches and the fact that the Tanglewood is run by Nick Thomas nephew, Simon, mean that everyone feels part of the family.
Who is your head chef, what is their experience and signature dish?
Our head chef is Bruce Hutton who began his career in South Africas top hotels, specialising in game cuisine, them later worked in the Canary Islands. After moving to the UK on 2004 he is using his 24 years of experience to create fabulous food at the Tanglewood.
Bruces approach to cooking is to use fresh produce to create modern British cuisine. He loves to support local suppliers by sourcing ingredients as close to home as possible. His signature dish is crisp crackled belly pork served with apple puree and sausage and sage stuffing. Everything is made in his kitchen on the premises.
