Thousands of pounds are raised at a charity lunch hosted by Raymond Blanc

Readers dug deep into their pockets and showed just how generous they are at a Pedal for Yorkshire charity lunch hosted by celebrity chef Raymond Blanc at his brasserie in Leeds. A record £7,795 was raised at the event bringing the Pedal for Yorkshire campaign total in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care in Yorkshire to £35,819.

Raymond is patron and long-time friend of Pedal for Yorkshire, founded by Fiona Movley from Ben Rhydding, West Yorkshire, who, with a team of supporters, has worked to raise money for Marie Curie to allow more cancer patients in the region to receive care at home.

More than 100 readers joined us for the charity lunch at Brasserie Blanc by the Leeds waterfront during which they enjoyed a drinks reception followed by a three course meal.

‘I’m shell-shocked by the amount of money that has been raised,’ said Fiona. ‘It’s amazing but it is thanks to a wonderful team of friends and supporters and such supportive Yorkshire Life readers and, of course, Raymond.’

Raymond said he was very proud to be able to support such a wonderful cause and he recalled the short time when he trained as a nurse on a French hospital ward treating patients with leukaemia. He explained to the audience that he found it so distressing he couldn’t continue with his training. He said about Marie Curie Cancer Care: ‘What you do is wonderful. I am very proud to be able to support you.’ He hugged and kissed Lynne Hughes-Guy, winner of an auction to stay at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Great Milton, Oxfordshire and sold a kiss to another guest Karen Eaton.

Fiona founded Pedal for Yorkshire because she wanted to do something to help cancer patients receive the care they wanted in their own home. She and her husband Scott, together with friends, had already cycled coast to coast to raise money for Marie Curie and thought they could take it further by encouraging others to do the same and Pedal for Yorkshire was launched.
