Yorkshire’s farm shops, delis, and grocers are rising to the lockdown challenge. Tony Greenway checks out some collect and deliver champions

How is your social distancing/self-isolation going? By rights, I should be very good at it. I’ve been working from home for years and can spend weeks at a time making phone calls, making coffee, staring at the dog and seeing no-one, apart from the postie. Plus my brain is positively hard-wired to enjoy repeats of The Professionals and Minder on ITV4. So, on paper, this is totally my thing.

Yet, in reality, being forced to stay at home and watch old episodes of Bodie and Doyle on a loop? Hmm. That’s not so appealing. I would venture out but, of course, the only place to go is the supermarket, which is fine if you want bags of Wotsits and jars of olives, but not so great if you’re after life’s essentials, such as bread, milk, eggs, flour, meat, pasta, fruit, vegetables, soup, beans, laundry detergent and, of course, loo roll.

Placing an (non-supermarket) online food order with local suppliers is a good way to keep your spirits up. With that in mind, here are some Yorkshire outlets that, at the time of writing (early April), were operating an online delivery or click and collect service. As this is a fast-moving situation, log on to their websites to find out if anything has changed, or check out Big Barn (bigbarn.co.uk), which is on a mission to reconnect consumers with local producers.

Blacker Hall Farm Shop

This award-winning Wakefield-based farm shop is a firm favourite of local girl Jane McDonald and, like her, something of a Yorkshire icon. At the time of writing, Blacker Hall was offering a local home delivery ‘to those who are over 70, vulnerable or self-isolating and unable to leave their homes’, a ‘drive-thru’, plus a ‘click and collect’ service featuring best-selling items.

The Balloon Tree

It’s hard to believe that this York farm shop, situated on the A166 between Gate Helmsley and Stamford Bridge, started off as a wooden hut with a table on the side of the road. It’s since bloomed into an award-winning venue with a wonderful deli (you have to give the scotch eggs a try) and bakery. At the time of writing it was working on a box scheme and planning to carry on with deliveries to the over 70s and vulnerable groups. Check out the website for the latest news.

At the time of writing, Farmer Copley’s shop – on the Pontefract Road – was open; and while local delivery slots were aimed at those who aren’t able to leave their homes, it was offering an order and collect service and a ‘drive-thru’ service using contactless payment. Neat.

Bettys

It may not seem like it right now, but the world really does keep on turning. How do we know? Because Bettys keeps on delivering via its online service. A note on Bettys website says – understandably – that there’s a chance your order may be delayed because couriers are facing an increase in demand. bettys.co.uk

Minskip Farm Shop

This Boroughbridge venue was due to open a new cafe on April 1. That didn’t happen because of coronavirus, of course; so when lockdown was announced, Minskip went into home delivery mode, and has been taking fresh food to the doorsteps of the local community, especially the at-risk and elderly. Since launching, the service has been averaging 100 deliveries a day and hundreds of orders each week, which means all its staff have been retained and new ones hired to help deal with the influx of orders.
