Yummy Yorkshire Luxury Ice Cream

Some of the countrys finest ice creams and sorbets are found here in Yorkshire. There are a number of small companies including Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream, near Skipton, which has made ice cream for three generations using milk and cream produced by cows which graze the lush Dales meadows.

Brymor Ice Cream is also Dales based this time in Wensleydale and produces on the farm ice creams and sorbets. They also make ice cream cakes that can be decorated to order.

And East Yorkshires Mr Moos real dairy ice cream is made using a dedicated herd of Yorkshire cows at Harpham. They use the days fresh milk and cream to produce more than 30 different flavours using local fruits and ingredients when ever possible.

Another company, Yorkshire Yummy Ice Cream, is a relatively new comer run by Louise and Jeremy Holmes, at Delph House Farm, a 250 acre, third generation family business, which has been processing and bottling its own milk since the 1960s. They turned to ice cream production as milk prices fell and production costs soared forcing them to re-evaluate their business and look at diversification.

The couple already made and sold milkshakes at local food festivals, using their own milk and cream. But it wasnt until Jeremy began experimenting with an ice cream maker bought as a gift for Christmas that they made the decision to manufacture ice cream.

They invested in state of the art machinery and called in Joseph Boni a member of the Italian Boni family who ran a successful ice cream caf in Edinburgh, as consultant. We wouldnt be where we are today without his help and support, said Louise, who before this venture had no previous experience of the food industry.

He ended up staying with us for some time to show us how the machine worked, and helped us devise the original basic recipe.

Yummy Yorkshire luxury dairy ice cream is made with the milk and cream from the farms own herd of 120 Friesian Holsteins, grazing on Pennine pastures. Its very much a farm based business with many of the original stone buildings now used for the production of ice cream.

Making ice cream is a simple but precise process and these days, not only are the freshest ingredients important but so is using the best machinery to paddle and cool the ice cream mix.

The Holmes next step, after a year of selling to retailers and over the farm gate, was to convert two redundant calf pens into a contemporary ice cream parlour and coffee shop.

They believe the key to their success is the range of flavours they have introduced. In addition to 10 core flavours, they also have up to five seasonal specialities at any one time, including rhubarb and custard. Louises recipes have gained a cult following among foodies and have helped them win a string of awards.

Lous Liquorice flavour took Best Dairy Product and the coveted Supreme Product of the Year at the 2009/10 Deliciouslyorkshire Awards as well as three gold stars at the 2009 Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards.

Flavours they create include strawberry, caramel fudge, banoffee pie, marmalade cheesecake, midnight mint, Caribbean chocolate, Oreo cookies and cream, Lizzies Eton mess, real lemon curd and blueberry.

There has also been television recognition when Gordon Ramseys F Word crew visited last year and Louise came up with a Chilly Chilli flavour.

Ice cream cornets have also proved to be a surprising hit with the Delph House Farm hens if you happen to be sitting on a bench in the farmyard courtyard youre likely to have a couple of fluffy hens just waiting for to peck at any leftovers.
