The Coachman Inn in Snainton looks less like a restaurant and more like a grand private home with a hint of Jane Austen about it.


‘I’ve always loved Georgian buildings, so I knew this was the place for us as soon as I walked in,’ said director Margaret Taylor, who has run the inn with her husband Alan and daughter Claire since September 2009. ‘It feels like a rather grand private house and I know our guests often feel like their having lunch in Jane Austen’s dining room.’


The family have always been in the service industry, but this is their first inn. Handily located down a country lane just a short drive from the east coast between Pickering and Scarborough, The Coachman is building a reputation as a destination restaurant and bar with rooms.


The Taylor’s dedicated team aim to make guests feel relaxed and at home amid the Grade II listed Georgian architecture, built in 1776 and steeped in coaching heritage.

The foundations of the inn were laid with the Turnpike Act of 1740, which was established as a means of collecting money to repair roads so that mail coaches and riders could travel in safety. A toll bar was erected at Snainton and by 1776 The Coachman Inn - then known as The New Inn - opened its doors for business as a much-needed staging post between York and Scarborough.

Since taking over, the Taylors have concentrated on recreating the feel of an 18th centre country house, with manicured lawns and decorative borders that give visitors a colourful glimpse of the changing seasons.

Underpinning the inn’s standard of service are people with a passion for what they do. People like head chef Calvin Porter, who runs the brigade in Carriages, the Coachman’s restaurant.

East coast seafood, Yorkshire game and Dales’ cheeses play a prominent role on the menu, complemented by a wine list designed to suit all palates and budgets.

‘Calvin joined us in January 2010 and has delivered everything he promised - great food and an AA Rosette,’ said Margaret. ‘His plates are like works of art. The food is completely original. It’s traditional British in origin but with contemporary flair.’

Private dining is available in the Red Room, where 12 people can enjoy a family celebration or business dinner in an intimate yet buzzing atmosphere. And that atmosphere is reflected in the bar, which is full of local charm, with sturdy arts and crafts furniture, hunting memorabilia and old photographs creating a sense of warmth and character.

The Coachman recently introduced afternoon teas to its menu of services and plans are afoot to open up a bistro area and add to further bedrooms.

‘We need to get the word out that we’re here,’ said Margaret. ‘Because once people find us, we’re bound to become a favourite.’
