One man who is bursting with barn conversion ideas is Matthew Webber, managing director of York Property Solutions. We asked him to tell us about why you should convert an old barn and where to start:

Can you convert a barn to live in?

Yes, barn conversions make stunning homes and living spaces. With naturally high and traditional features, barn conversions are light and spacious. Coupled with traditional beams and oak structures, they are ripe to have new life breathed into them, creating beautiful spaces which feature a modern touch.

With more people relocating from busy cities to the Yorkshire countryside, barn conversions are becoming increasingly popular. They're also a great place to live as they're usually found in rural villages and towns - areas where developers would fail to achieve planning for new build houses.

Why complete a barn conversion?

Old barns which are no longer fit for use in modern agriculture ultimately become redundant assets which, if not maintained, begin to devalue. Successfully converting a barn can significantly increase its value.

Planning legislation currently favours the conversion of barns to dwellings and barn conversions make stunning, unique and bespoke homes.

The most popular conversions are residential, but barns can also make great commercial premises such as holiday lets, offices and shops.

Another significant benefit of a barn conversion is that currently the conversion works are subject to a reduced VAT rate of 5pc.

How do you design a barn conversion?

We start by assessing the original feature of the barn whilst carefully determining the client's requirements. Our specialist design team then work to create a unique dwelling which is in keeping with the original structure.

The design of the conversion can be tailored to meet most tastes and requirements - from modern contemporary to a traditional country house.

Like our clients, we love the unique characteristics and original features that barn conversions offer. From traditional roof structures and archways to high ceilings and feature brickwork, we love to work with the original building and bring it back to life.

How long does a barn conversion project (typically) take?

There are a lot of factors to consider, but typically you're looking at a 9-12 month build programme.

York Property Solutions Ltd is a family owned business born out of a genuine love of all construction works. The members of the team have over 60 year's construction experience, which is reflected in its professional service and high-quality projects.
