Jackie Summerfield, managing director of Show Business Interiors, reveals what inspired the sophisticated look at the Chocolate Works

After the wave of excitement that greeted the launch of the Chocolate Works development, prospective buyers can now get an even closer view of this highly desirable York location – once the home of the iconic Terrys brand – by touring the show apartment and hotly-anticipated four-bedroom show home, which is due to open in October.

My team and I were tasked with the design of the first show property, a spacious two-bedroom apartment located in the sales office, which replicates the exact layout of properties in the Chocolate Works’ Hallmark House.

The open plan design of the living space provided us with the perfect canvas for recreating the blend of traditional and contemporary styles that epitomise the development.

There’s no doubt that these are desirable homes in an iconic location, and the materials used in their construction are of the highest calibre. We agreed it was vital to ensure the interior of the show apartment reflected this luxury, while still feeling like a place you would want to relax in after a long day at work – or at the races next door.

We used materials like glass, chrome and pewter to create a sense of modern luxury, alongside softer upholstered furnishings, which gives the apartments a contemporary design without being too cold.

If you want to create a similar contemporary look in your own home:

Make use of texture

A white colour scheme keeps things fresh, but can feel cold if you’re not careful. Make use of textured wallpapers on feature walls and soft feel good fabrics such as velvet and silk to keep warmth in the room.

Lighten up

Natural light is all well and good, but when the night sets in, ensure you have a variety of lighting on both the ceiling and the table to create warmth and ambience in the evenings.

Don’t forget the details

We used a variety of materials in the Chocolate Works to create a sense of opulence and glamour. Try chrome studding on upholstered furnishings, trimming and beads on throws and cushions and mirrored furniture and accessories to take your room to the next level of luxury. w
