Juliette Howick describes how her passion for photography has developed into ambition to make it her career
‘I am a freelance photographer from Rothwell in Leeds. I have been taking photographs for about five years now, initially taking photos of family and friends which gave me the confidence to broaden my horizons and start taking pictures of landscapes and scenery around Yorkshire and abroad.
‘When I bought my first camera I was unsure how to use it so I joined a camera club in Castleford which also taught me a lot about constructive criticism which is an asset that I feel you need in photography to help you improve and learn from your mistakes.
‘For several years I went to the Whitby Gothic event with my son, where I took photographs of the Goths but I also took photographs of beautiful sunsets and sunrises while I was there. I had several images published in a calendar for the Lurcher Link, a charity which rescues and finds new homes for lurcher dogs and which sold 500 copies in 2012. I have been published in Yorkshire Life as well as in the Yorkshire Evening Post and the Whitby Gazette.
‘I then joined a group on Facebook run by Nicky Busby called Nicky’s Camera Club where I posted my images which gives people all around Yorkshire a chance to view them. I have photographed weddings, birthday parties, horse jumping events and even high school reunions at my high school in Oulton in Leeds.
‘I really cannot explain the feeling I have when people tell me that I take great photographs and I’m looking forward to continuing my work in photography. I aspire to have a career as a photographer.’
