A new community initiative is transforming diverse venues in Keighley, Ben Rhydding and Bradford into pop up cinemas.

A new community initiative is transforming diverse venues in Keighley, Ben Rhydding and Bradford into pop up cinemas.

Cine Yorkshire and Bradford UNESCO City of Film have joined forces to launch Bradford Community Cinema with a screening of This Sporting Life at Bradford Cathedral, followed by shows throughout the year at unusual venues like The Wheatley Arms in Ben Rhydding, where there will be a series of film and supper evenings; Culture Fusion at Bradford YMCA, which will be screening a programme of films for young audiences; and Keighley Central Hall, home to the newly established Keighley Film Club.

Rachel McWatt, Cine Yorkshire project manager at the National Media Museum, said: We hope to reach an increasingly diverse audience for cinema in Bradford by working closely with each venue to develop a specially-tailored programme and providing new and exciting ways for people to share and enjoy film.

Bradford is the worlds first UNESCO City of Film. This permanent title bestows international recognition on the West Yorkshire city as a world centre for film because of its rich cinematic heritage, its inspirational locations and its many festivals to celebrate the moving image.

Bradford Community Cinema gives us an opportunity to spread film fever right across the district following a successful model developed by Cine Yorkshire across the wider region, said David Wilson, director of Bradford UNESCO City of Film.

Im really pleased were working in both rural and urban settings and across a broad audience range. I hope people will take advantage of digital cinema coming to their locality to enable us to expand the scheme in the future.
