An eclectic array of paintings and sculpture by Leeds artist George Hainsworth is now on public display at Hester Gallery in Meanwood.

A graduate of the prestigious Slade School, he completed his studies at The British School in Rome and went on to become professor of fine art at Leeds Metropolitan University, where he was greatly valued as a teacher and mentor by his students and staff.

Hainsworths work has been described as an expression of the human condition; honest, joyful, optimistic, but also occasionally dark and despondent.

The artist himself says his paintings set something in motion as he reacts to the world around him, to historical events, natural phenomena like the Hale Bopp Comet, to poetry and film, or to a kite surfer on a beach.

The subject matter I deal with is not static, it evolves, he said. I like to be pragmatic.

The Hester exhibition includes sculptures as well as paintings, highlighting Hainsworths particular fascination with bronze heads.

Showing work by Leeds artists has always been important to us, said gallery owner Simon Hester. We have exhibited a wide range of local artists including Joash Woodrow, Christopher P Wood, Jonathan Ashworth and Judith Cain, as well as artists from other parts of Yorkshire like Jake Attree.

Im very excited to be showing George Hainsworths work at this stage in his career. The exhibition includes a selection of paintings and sculptures thats highly representative of the various complex elements to be found in his work, including landscapes and metaphorical paintings as well as his signature floral paintings.

Under The Stars: Paintings and Sculpture by George Hainsworth runs at Hester Gallery, Meanwood, Leeds until November 3rd. For details, call 0113 262 0056 or visit hestergallery.co.uk.
