Newby Hall

Archant

Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and home since 1748 to the Compton family, Newby Hall is one of Britain’s finest Adam houses, with Chippendale furniture, Gobelins tapestries and classical statuary.

The 25 acres of stunning, award winning gardens include one of Europes largest double herbaceous borders, running from the house to the tranquil River Ure and smaller formal areas such as the Rose Garden, Rock Garden and Autumn Garden. Newby also holds a national collection of Cornus (Dogwoods). Younger visitors will enjoy the miniature railway and thoughtfully designed adventure gardens. While the an enchanting woodland walk, delightful contemporary shop, superb licensed restaurant and plant centre make Newby one of Yorkshires favourite family attractions. Special events throughout the year.

Duty Calls - Newby Hall in times of war

This exhibition, new for 2013, explores the impact of war on Yorkshire country houses and their communities. These are co-ordinated by the Yorkshire Country Houses Partnership - www.yhcp.org.uk There are other exhibitions at:

Beningborough Hall & Gardens near York - Kiplin Hall & Gardens near Catterick - Brodsworth Hall near Doncaster - Lotherton Hall near Leeds - Castle Howard near Malton - Nostell Priory near Wakefield - Fairfax House in York - Sewerby Hall & Gardens near Bridlington. At Newby we are looking at how the two World Wars affected the Hall, the estate and the surrounding communities. In particular, the Halls role in World War 2 as part of The Coates Mission was very secret and largely undocumented, as a result this is the first time it has been properly told. There are also memories from local people, which together with documentation from the period, show how they coped, both here at home and away fighting.
