Cannon Hall Farm

They say never work with animals and children, but these magnificent seven farms are a great day out for the family

Cannon Hall

This large, family-run farm attraction is a real world of animal magic. Set in Cawthorne, near Barnsley, it’s home to highland cattle, llamas, donkeys, ponies, rabbits, guinea pigs, lambs, goats, piglets and even the occasional wallaby.

But that’s not all. Cannon Hall also has a well-stocked farm shop offering local produce and fine foods from around the world, one of the biggest and best-equipped playgrounds in the north and – drum roll please – the largest tube maze in Europe.

Bark House Lane, Cawthorne, Barnsley, S75 4AT; 01226 790427; cannonhallfarm.co.uk

Thornton Hall Farm

Hitch a ride on a 4x4, let the kids loose in Wizzick Play Barn, get lost in a giant straw maze, collect some eggs or go on an animal-petting spree – all farm life is right here.

Heeley City Farm

Did you know there was a farm at the heart of Sheffield? Well, now you do. This relaxing slice of country life, complete with playground and café, is an eco-friendly community project founded in 1981.

Big Sheep Little Cow

This small dairy unit gives visitors the chance to feed lambs and calves (including Dexters, Britain’s smallest breed), inspect sheep, cuddle goats, ride ponies and, if the whim takes you, bathe a pig.

Playdale Farm Park

With a huge indoor play area, a ball pool, tractor zone and adventure trail (as well as animals of course), this coastal farm is packed with things to do whatever the weather.
