From white knuckle rides to a mind boggling giant maze, we pick our favourite theme parks

Flamingo Land

With seven unique themed areas, including Children’s Planet, the latest activity zone for younger visitors, you’ll find it hard to squeeze all the fun into just one day. There are adrenaline-fuelled thrills, including the world’s steepest drop on the record-breaking Mumbo Jumbo ride, and lots of family fun with the wet and wacky world of Splosh! and Zooom!, the park’s latest aeroplane coaster.

Lightwater Valley

Catapult yourself to dizzying heights aboard Whirlwind, hurtle through a dark forest on The Ultimate (Europe’s longest roller coaster), swashbuckler your way into Skeleton Cove, or shoot the waves of the Wild River Rapids. 0871 720 0011 lightwatervalley.co.uk

You can pretend you’re driving full-size construction machinery for the sake of the kids if you like, but no one will believe you. Diggerland is a great day out for all the family, with diggers, dumpers, JCBs and monster trucks aplenty.

Forbidden Corner

If you’re looking for something truly unique, then this weirdly wonderful labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises is the place for you. The temple of the underworld, eye of the needle and glass pyramid are just three of the things that make it a day out with a difference.

Stockeld Park

Active woodland Adventure Zones make this a great choice for tiring out energetic youngsters. It’s particularly worth a visit in winter when the forest is turned into an enchanted wonderland and you can have a go at Nordic skiing and ice skating.

Peasholm Park

Launched in 1912, this delightful oriental-themed park has become a real favourite among Scarborough’s myriad attractions. Visitors can hire boats, canoes and pedalos, admire the gentle waterfalls, take a miniature train ride and seek out artistically carved tree stumps (there’s a squirrel and a dragon!).

York Maze

Created from more than a million living, growing maize plants, York Maze is not just the largest maze in the UK, it’s also an award-winning, fun-filled day out. With more than 20 rides, attractions and shows, it’s more than just an opportunity to get lost.
