Guests at the Firecracker Ball, held at Rudding Park, Harrogate, helped to raise £160,000 for Barnardo’s in Yorkshire, bringing the amount donated to the children’s charity since 2002 to more than £1million.

The money raised at this event goes towards helping young carers who look after a sick or disabled member of their family. Their day to day responsibilities often include cooking, cleaning, shopping, providing nursing and personal care as well as giving emotional support.

And children, supported by Willow Young Carers, Leeds, took centre
stage at the ball to talk about their experiences and how Barnardo’s has helped them to deal with their daily caring responsibilities.

The theme for the Firecracker Ball was Narnia complete with giant iron gates, ice bar and snow covered trees. Star guest was Spandau Ballet singer-songwriter Tony Hadley.

Firecracker committee chairman and vice president of Barnardo’s, Phil Taylor, said he was overwhelmed by the generosity of guests. He added: ‘The children from Willow Young Carers were fabulous hosts and Tony Hadley certainly rocked. How can we possibly top such a wonderful event for 2012?’

Barnardo’s young carers’ services which are set to benefit from the funds raised are in Leeds, Bradford, Rotherham, Doncaster and Wakefield.

Sponsors of the Firecracker Ball included Evans Property Group, Dickinson Dees and UBS Wealth Management. This year’s ball is on November 10th. For ticket and sponsorship information please contact Kirsty Guy 01748 821295 or kirsty.guy@barnardos.org.uk or visit thefirecrackerball.org.
