Clouds scudded across the sky threatening rain but nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of Yorkshire Life readers who arrived at Middlethorpe Hall near York for lunch. They came from all over the county to enjoy not only fine food and the company of other readers but also to tour the country house gardens carefully nurtured by head gardener David Barker. Almost 90 readers were at the event, one of the biggest organised by Yorkshire Life and hosted by Middlethorpe Hall, who enjoyed a summer lunch which included asparagus and pea mousse, braised shoulder of lamb and strawberry and vanilla cream. Our food and wine consultant Annie Stirk congratulated the chefs on their choice of flavours and their light touch which brought appreciative applause from readers. Earlier in the day there was Pimms, fruit punch and Mumm Rose Champagne on the terrace to the music of the Karl Mullen Trio before readers were invited to tour some of the gardens at the house led by David Barker. Readers David and Valerie Naylor who travelled from Scarborough for the Yorkshire Life event said they enjoyed meeting the head gardener and welcomed the chance to ask him questions. 'The garden tour has given us ideas for our own garden which is by the coast,' added Valerie. Readers also enjoyed the wine supplied by London wine merchants, Corney and Barrow, represented by Chris Halse as well as Mumm Rose Champagne represented by Helen Balfour. Middlethorpe Hall is a favourite venue for Yorkshire Life events. It is a country house set in 20 acres of gardens and parkland. It was built in 1699 and once the home of the diarist Lady Mary Wortley Montague. After a period of neglect, Middlethorpe Hall was bought and restored by Historic House Hotels who also own Hartwell House, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and Bodysgallen Hall, North Wales. The house today is decorated with antiques and fine pictures carefully chosen to match the period of the house. The gardens and parkland have also been restored and include ha ha's, a white garden, a walled garden, a small lake and some very beautiful specimen trees.
