The patron of the Northern Ballet Theatre helped celebrate the company's 40th anniversary at a Leeds Grand Theatre gala.
Prince Edward, patron of Northern Ballet Theatre, helped celebrate the companys 40th anniversary at a fund raising gala with more than 1,400 guests. The event at the Leeds Grand Theatre raised more than 60,000 for the momentum campaign launched to help create a dance centre for the North of England.
It will be the largest of its kind outside London and will bring together two of the UK's leading dance companies, Northern Ballet Theatre and Phoenix Dance Theatre. It will be the only dance space to house a national classical and a national contemporary dance company alongside each another.
The momentum campaign was launched in January 2008 to raise the outstanding funds needed to secure the completion of the 12 million project in Leeds this year.
Dance companies taking part in performances at the gala included The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Rambert Dance Company, Stuttgart Ballet as well as Northern Ballet Theatre.
Northern Ballet Theatres artistic director, David Nixon, received an OBE for services to dance in the New Years Honours List. He said he was overwhelmed by the honour and added: Coming at the end of NBTs 40th anniversary year it is the icing on the cake to a wonderful year for the company and for me personally. I would like to thank everyone who endorsed my nomination, the team at NBT for their hard work and dedication and especially my wife, Yoko Ichino for her unwavering support.
