With the ongoing debate about how much time children spend on video games amidst the backdrop of many arts facilities suffering major cuts in the past decade, there is a fear that the nation's youth is losing its creative spark.

However, one local charity is aiming to give children the chance to express themselves through creative writing. Grimm & Co, a Yorkshire/Humberside charity, based in Rotherham town centre, offer exciting, imaginative and free workshops that cover all types of creative writing, from poetry and stories to scriptwriting for the radio, with the goal of igniting imaginations, building confidence, self-esteem and resilience in children and young people.

They also deliver story making and comedy writing workshops for school groups, and over 3,000 children visit with their school each year, leaving motivated, inspired, clutching the illustrated book that they've authored.

The charity is not the only reason to visit the quirky base, 'The Apothecary to the Magical'. This unique experience includes a magic-o-meter to test your magic levels, a fairy-tale mail service where children can write a letter to anyone in the magical world (receiving a reply by owl post within 10 days) and a Forgotten Library that is full of books - all free to take away.

As the name suggests, the Apothecary is a beautiful olde-worlde shop selling unique gifts that appeal to magical beings and humans alike - the old and the young, the literary and humour loving amongst us. Where else can you buy Middle Aged Vitriol, A Pinch of Happiness and Concentrated Concentration?

Grimm & Co also provide personalised gifts including wedding favours and unique stationery/gift items for weddings, parties and conferences with quirky, fun items to suit all pockets whilst supporting a children's charity. Our NovelTea boxes offer a hamper of pampering literary treats for that extra special present that will wow the recipient.

The product labels describe ingredients from the twinkling of an eye, sugar-spun pompoms and decanted daydreams, and side-effects such as hairy eyeballs, squeaky bottom burps and spontaneous limbo dancing. One product can lead to the user being immediately compelled to open a book shop in Barnsley.

The folk at Grimm & Co have a strong ethical stance, using recycled and recyclable packaging and locally sourced, high quality products. They are also on a mission to reduce plastic use through refillable bottles, solid shampoos and soap bars.

Don't worry if you can't get into Rotherham, the full range of products are available online at, and the website is well worth a visit for its stunning photos, illustrations, and stories written by the children.

While this presents an opportunity to find a unique and quirky eco-friendly gift for your family and friends, you also contribute towards helping to keep the creative activities free and accessible to everyone.

Grimm & Co is a charity that relies on income from the shop, as well as fundraising activities and donations. There are many ways in which you can support the charity, including sponsoring a school workshop, joining the membership club or raising money through daredevil (or otherwise) activities.
