Jillian Thomas - My Yorkshire weekend

Sheffield financial advisor Jillian Thomas discusses the finer things in life
I often find myself working late and meeting clients on many evenings in the week, but once 5pm on Friday rolls around I’m out of the door and the weekend begins.
I live in Sheffield close to Mosborough Hall Hotel, which is part of Greg Dyke’s Saxon Hotel Group. This is always my first port of call after driving home. In fact, it’s such a routine that they usually start preparing my Hendricks gin and slimline tonic while I’m still strolling over the road.
Saturday belongs to my 87-year-old mum, who lives in Sheffield too. She usually has a list of chores for us to get through, so I may well be up a ladder changing a bulb or mowing the lawn.
I also love to go to a wonderful shop in Hillsborough called Fine Fabrics. I don’t buy many clothes off the peg as I’m the wrong shape, so I like to have my suits and evening dresses designed and made for me. Richard at Fine Fabrics has been finding me the most gorgeous materials for 40 years now. He’s even been known to call me on my mobile and say he’s just had an amazing fabric delivered from Switzerland and is going to put some to one side for me because he knows I’ll love it. He’s always right.
On Saturday evening, if I’m lucky, there’ll be a new musical production being staged at Sheffield Lyceum or Crucible. I just love the theatre.
I usually check my work emails on Sunday morning. Clients often get in touch over the weekend when they’ve had a look at their personal finances or read something in the news. I like to get ahead and make sure a response is in their in-tray by Monday morning if I can.
Some weekends I meet up with old friends who live in Leeds and York for a fabulous lunch at our chosen mid-way destination, an Italian restaurant called Rinaldi in Wakefield. We discovered the place five years ago and return every few months. The head waiter knows us now and remembers what we like. The personal service and food are incredible; the fresh fish and tiramisu in particular are to die for.
A lovely walk around the lake at nearby Pugney’s Country Park always follows before we go our separate ways.
My passions include gardening and growing vegetables so you’ll often find me cutting back roses or planting cauliflowers and broccoli amongst the flowers in my busy beds and pots.
I love modern art too, so I’m a regular visitor at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. There really is nothing finer that seeing the Henry Moore sculptures in the changing light set against the natural landscape.
Finally, if I have time to squeeze in another walk, Rother Valley Country Park is quite lovely. It’s been developed on top of an old gravel works in an industrial area very close to the M1, but the wildlife there is incredible.
