Having lived in East Yorkshire for the last 20 years, I make sure my weekends are spent out and about in this amazing county. Whether near the coast, on the Wolds or further north in the Dales and Moors, its a great place to be.

I am a photographer as well as a gallery owner and enjoy the variety of landscapes Yorkshire has to offer. There is always another vale or village to explore. And whilst travelling around I can keep up with the work of the many artists in the area and visit other galleries.

I am particularly keen on Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the municipal galleries in Leeds, Sheffield and Hull, but there are also many excellent independent galleries.

Alongside travelling and mixing business with pleasure, I enjoy reading and history. Again, Yorkshire affords many opportunities. There are some great literature festivals across Yorkshire, including East Yorkshires own, which I was proud to help establish some years ago through lottery funding. Other notable festivals, such as Ilkley, also continue to attract writers of national and international recognition to the area. Being a member of a book club in Beverley also means I usually have a book at my side wherever I am.

Alongside my interest in photography, I am something of a film fan and a member of Beverley Film Society. I still enjoy visiting the National Media Museum in Bradford, getting back there at least once every year. This is a tradition I started when my daughters were young, and one that I try to keep up. Its wonderful to have such a major national museum and archive on our doorstep. This combined with a visit to Salts Mill and the Hockney galleries is, to me, a perfect day out.

I enjoy walking around Beverley, my home town for two decades. Whilst there are many historic associations across the region, Beverley has been here a long time and was the 13th richest town in the UK when the Doomsday Book was prepared.

So many of the buildings and street layouts are medieval and even the building that houses my gallery is timber-framed with the earliest parts dating back to the 16th century. I can feel a sense of the past on my way to the gallery there are so many traces of history in Beverley.
I also rather like a visit to the pub, whether to join in with the quiz or, in the morning, for breakfast served with newspapers.
