Pedal for Yorkshire to fundraise for Marie Curie

We begin the New Year with a pledge to support Pedal for Yorkshire, whose patron is chef Raymond Blanc. They aim to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and readers are invited to join in
I have to admire you, said chef Raymond Blanc as he sat with Marie Curie nurse Tracey Norman in his Leeds restaurant. I tried it and couldnt endure the heartbreak. I was 18 but not strong enough to deal with all the emotions. He was telling her about his work as a nurse on a leukaemia ward in his home town of Besancon in France. I worked there for 18 months but could not stay. It was too much for me.
But he has never forgotten those early days as a junior nurse and readily accepted the invitation to become patron of Pedal for Yorkshire, a charity launched by Fiona Movley, from Ben Rhydding, who wanted to encourage greater support for cancer care at home.
Tracey is not only a Marie Cancer nurse but an ambassador for the charity in Leeds and talks with passion about the importance of practical support for patients and their families. Her role involves working through the night allowing families to rest knowing a loved one is receiving the best possible attention. I love my work, caring for people. My role is to give practical help and emotional support.
The first Pedal for Yorkshire cycling event last year raised over 7,500 for Marie Curie. The success of this one off event, a coast to coast cycle ride organised by Fiona led to the launch of Pedal for Yorkshire. Fiona and an organising committee want to encourage people from all around Yorkshire to get on their bikes for Marie Curie and organise their own fundraising events.
We hope that individuals, groups of friends, societies and businesses will organise their own Pedal for Yorkshire events to raise funds to increase the nursing hours for cancer patients throughout the whole county.
The event can be anything from a pedal around the park, a sponsored cycle to work or even a fancy dress cycle ride. Events will take place throughout the year culminating in Pedal for Yorkshire Week in September when the grand total raised for the year will be publically announced.
We have already had support from many local businesses to get the project up and running and should soon be able to announce some exciting Pedal for Yorkshire events.
In the spring there will be a very special Yorkshire Life Reader Lunch hosted by chef Raymond Blanc at Brassiere Blanc, Leeds, in support of Pedal for Yorkshire and Marie Curie Cancer Care. Full details of how you can join us will be in next months magazine.
