Peter Box - My Yorkshire Weekend
PUBLISHED: 00:00 10 January 2020
The Chair of Welcome to Yorkshire is passionate about the diverse county, from sculpture to seaside
Cllr Peter Box, CBE, became Chair of Welcome to Yorkshire last October and was one of the longest serving local government leaders, being Leader of Wakefield Council since 1998. A trustee of Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The Hepworth, Peter has spent a lifetime promoting the benefits of Yorkshire. His work across our region spans two decades, serving as Leader then Chairman of the Regional Assembly from 2000-2009.
Peter was awarded the CBE in 2009 for services to local government.
The week is all about…
My week has radically changed. For me, I'm in listening mode at the moment - to the brilliant frontline staff at WTY, the board and members of the organisation. There's so much goodwill around and a determination to continue to market the best brand in UK tourism - Yorkshire.
That Friday night feeling…
Friends round, takeaway or cocktails - what does Friday night bring?
Feet up, phone off (maybe) and telly on. Though I'm often late back from meetings on a Friday, so a Friday evening, when it eventually arrives is precious 'downtime' for me.
Saturday morning - papers or Park Run?
Always papers - and I would encourage people to buy a local/regional paper. Not running, but I am obsessed with my 'fitbit' and getting my 10,000 steps in, not just on a Saturday, but every day.
Feeding time - brunch, lunch or picnic?
Time for any would be nice. But a good lunch is always welcome. It's astonishing how many top rated chefs and restaurants we have in this region, as well as a growing number of 'pop up' and permanent world food outlets.
Retail therapy - where would you head? Favourite shopping haunts.
Can't possibly decide and anyway, if I did, Mrs Box wouldn't be happy. But we've got all the big brands in the region and a healthy, independent retail offer.
Saturday night perfection is…
…watching Strictly Come Dancing. The standard this year from the celebrities is amazing. There's at least four who could win it.
Sunday chills - what's your relaxation?
I love gardening, all year round. It really can take you to another place, stops you worrying about things. The joy of seeing your hard work literally blossom is very satisfying.
Fresh air favourites
Obviously, anywhere in the great county of Yorkshire. We're spoilt for choice: world leading cities, stunning coastlines and spectacular countryside. I would give a shout out to both the award winning Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. A walk round YSP is good for the soul and the smell of the sea also lifts the spirit.
Sunday night rituals
Watching the results on Strictly. I'm awarding a 10 to Yorkshire for its grace, charm, creativity, diversity and resilience.
