York is overflowing with things to see and do. But now it has an unusual additional must-see attraction: York Visitor Centre itself.
Its eye-catching interior design, with swirling graphics and 3D interconnected artwork, makes it so much more than a tourist information office. With 76,000 visitors in the first six months, and a 79 per cent increase in profit, the centre has been a major success.

The look was created by SoVibrant, a design consultancy based in Harrogate, with national and international clients to its name. Adam Atkinson began mulling over the business concept when he was a 16-year-old in Brighton. After graduating in interior design from Leeds University and working for two major design agencies, he felt ready to turn his teenage dream into reality, and SoVibrant was born.

I knew when I set the business up I would need to think differently about how I went to markets, said Adam. I was confident that businesses and individuals would be prepared to invest in design. But the economy and the business environment had changed, so I needed to make access to the variety of design and strategic services that businesses need more straightforward and cost-effective.

With expertise in everything from interior design to 3D visualisation, SoVibrant proved an attractive offer, bringing on board major organisations like Royal Mail.

This is a massive account and we really wanted to win it, said Adam. We really put the time and effort in and came up with a concept that fit them so well they bought in before we showed them any pictures.

It was a huge coup for the three-year-old Harrogate company. The thing that I really like about Yorkshire is theres a confidence here which is lacking elsewhere. The Yorkshire business world is fairly hardy to the recession.

Adams still only 31 and hes keen to grow take his business as far as it can go. Were always looking at the next big thing. We are going to move into productions everything from corporate video to full CGI.

What excites him about business? The fact that, if youve got a bit of entrepreneurial flair, a good idea, and youre not afraid to take risks, there really are opportunities for businesses to grow.
