Textile artist Catherine Green discusses her inspirations
When it comes to stylish scarves, it’s knot what you do, it’s the way that you wear it. Google it if you don’t believe us – dozens of ‘how to’ blogs and podcasts will pop up, including one from Liberty in London (we’ve watched it three times now – honestly, it’s more addictive than Nordic noir).
But there’s very little point in knowing 27 ways to wear a scarf if the scarf you own is about as stylish as a damp dishcloth. Which is where Yorkshire-based textile artist Catherine Green makes her triumphant entrance laden down with the latest range of luxury scarves from her accessories collection.
Harking back to seasonal hedgerows and the changing colours of the countryside after summer bids a fond farewell, the Autumn Berries range features intricate screen prints of grey, teal, coral pink and white.
‘My designs were inspired by the changes in the hedgerows coming into autumn, particularly the appearance of bunches of berries amongst the leaves,’ said Catherine. ‘I wanted to maintain the textured backgrounds present in my large originals with a scaled down version of the key design elements; the leaves, berries, repeat symbols and paint splats. These elements were edited on-screen after initially being hand-drawn to create a repeat pattern.’
The original designs, which comprise different elements from autumnal hedgerows in Catherine’s trademark loose style, were created using textured prints, screen prints and hand-drawn elements which were then edited using Photoshop to create a repeat pattern before being digitally printed on to luxurious silk jersey in the UK.
‘I’m really pleased with how they’ve turned out,’ said Catherine. ‘I put a lot of time and thought into the designs and have already had some great feedback. I can’t wait to get started on the next line.’
And the good news is that ‘the next line’ is already on its way, including a spring/summer design and a separate Yorkshire-inspired collection to tie-in with the artist’s exhibition of screen prints at Leeds Craft & Design Centre in July.
‘This one will combine geometric shapes inspired by Leeds’ buildings contrasting with floral motifs,’ Catherine revealed.
Catherine Green scarves retail at £65 and are available to buy online from catherinegreen.co.uk as well as from Millennium Galleries in Sheffield.
